Meet Twyla Axelson
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor serving North Denton County and the Lake Lewisville area. I specialize in trauma, anxiety, relationship struggles, and the lasting impact of family-of-origin experiences.
I work with individuals, couples, and families who feel stuck in patterns they can’t seem to break — overthinking, shutting down in conflict, avoiding difficult conversations, or carrying stress that never really turns off. Patterns that once made sense may now be creating distance, tension, or exhaustion.
If something keeps happening in your life or relationships, it’s not random. Patterns are learned over time. When we understand how one was built, we can adjust it — instead of staying stuck in it — and build something better.
My style is warm, steady, and direct. In our work together, we slow things down and make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface. Clients often tell me they feel comfortable being honest here — even about the messy or hard-to-say things. My goal is for you to feel truly known, not just treated — because that’s where meaningful change begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about starting therapy.
I primarily work with adults and couples. I am also trained in working with children and teens and provide thoughtful and developmentally appropriate therapy for ages 4 and up when it makes clinical sense — particularly as part of a larger family system approach.
The standard fee for individual and couples therapy sessions is $185 per session. Each session is typically 50-60 minutes in length.
Costs for group therapy sessions are generally $75 per 90 minute session.
I understand that financial circumstances vary, and I believe everyone deserves access to quality mental health care. In cases of financial need, I offer some flexibility with my fees. Please don't hesitate to discuss your situation with me during our initial consultation.
I do not accept insurance directly or bill insurance companies on your behalf. However, many clients are able to receive reimbursement for out-of-network mental health services through their insurance plans.
I am happy to provide you with a detailed receipt (superbill) that includes all the necessary information for you to submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. I recommend contacting your insurance provider to verify your out-of-network mental health benefits before our first session.
Alternatively, I partner with Mentaya, a third-party organization which allows me to check your out-of-network benefits. Many clients have achievable out-of-network deductibles and are able to be reimbursed for a percentage of their session fee once those are met. If you are interested in learning more about this, let me know during our free consultation.
That’s common. Often one partner is more motivated than the other — or one feels unsure about what therapy will be like. Couples therapy with me isn’t about taking sides or assigning blame. It’s about identifying patterns that both of you are caught in and learning how to shift them.
If your partner isn’t ready, you don’t have to wait to begin. Working on your own patterns, triggers, and responses can meaningfully change the dynamic of a relationship. When one person begins responding differently, the system often shifts.
If your partner is skeptical, I’m happy to answer questions ahead of time so they know what to expect. Many hesitant partners find that the process feels more structured and practical than they imagined.
Yes. I offer in-person sessions in North Denton County as well as secure virtual sessions for clients located in Texas. We can decide together which format best fits your schedule and comfort level.
The first session is a conversation, not an interrogation. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you in, what feels stuck, and what you’d like to see change. I’ll ask intentional questions, but there’s no pressure to have everything perfectly explained.
Early on, my job is to listen carefully and begin putting the pieces together — understanding your history, patterns, and what matters most — so we have something solid to build on.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Some clients come in with a specific goal and work toward it over a shorter period of time. Others choose to stay longer to address deeper patterns or long-standing dynamics.
We’ll regularly revisit your goals and adjust as needed. Therapy is collaborative — the pace and depth are guided by what’s most useful for you.
